Enabling Early Detection of Abnormal Signs and Accelerating the Adoption of Ammonia Fueled Vessels 22 April 2026
Ammonia fuel is considered one of the most promising next-generation fuels for advancing decarbonization in the maritime industry, as it emits little to no greenhouse gases during combustion. As the use of ammonia-fueled vessels expands, it becomes increasingly critical - just as with conventional vessels - to accurately monitor onboard equipment and detect early signs of potential abnormalities. One highly effective method for achieving this is condition monitoring through the analysis of engine lubricating oil. Because lubricating oil reflects the internal condition of an engine, analyzing it allows for early detection of potential abnormalities. Building on extensive verification trials, NYK and Nippon Yuka have developed the technical expertise required to realize a lubricating-oil analysis service for monitoring the condition of ammonia-fueled engines. Having successfully validated these processes, Nippon Yuka will now offer its specialized lubricating-oil analysis services to NYK Group companies and external customers. Moving forward, the NYK Group will continue to work toward a sustainable society and decarbonization through initiatives that promote the utilization of next-generation fuels, including ammonia.
