Gasum continues FuelEU Maritime pooling collaboration with Viking Line and Wallenius SOL in 2026

Partner vessels running on Bio-LNG achieve generous amounts of compliance surplus due to the fuel's negative emissions.

Nordic energy company Gasum continues its strategic pooling partnerships with shipping companies Viking Line and Wallenius SOL in 2026. By operating their vessels on bio-LNG, Viking Line and Wallenius SOL are generating compliance units for Gasum's FuelEU Maritime pool.

Wallenius SOL and Viking Line are committed to advancing sustainable shipping - both companies sail dual fuel vessels that can use LNG or bio-LNG interchangeably as fuel.

Their gas-powered vessels run on Gasum's premium bio-LNG, which has negative emissions, meaning that the reduction is beyond 100 percent. This is possible when the biogas is produced using waste from livestock.

"We are very happy to continue our FuelEU pooling collaboration with Viking Line and Wallenius SOL in 2026, which enables us to lower maritime emissions together. These long-term pooling partnerships add an important layer of stability to our service. Gasum's pooling offering is also uniquely reliable, because we produce and source the needed bio-LNG ourselves", says Jacob Granqvist, VP, Maritime, Gasum.

"For Viking Line, FuelEU Maritime compliance must go hand in hand with financial predictability. Pooling with Gasum allows us to meet regulatory requirements efficiently while maintaining flexibility in our fleet operations. Using bio-LNG is not only a climate-positive choice, but also a financially sound way to manage long-term regulatory risk", states Mats Engblom, Senior Vice President, Finance, Viking Line.

"For Wallenius SOL, the cooperation with Gasum is essential in supporting our ambition to enable more sustainable seaborne transport while ensuring compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulation. The use of bio-LNG, combined with pooling together with Gasum, provides a reliable and predictable framework for long-term regulatory compliance while delivering clear climate benefits", says Henrik Karle, Fleet Director & Chief Technical Officer, Wallenius SOL

Pooling allows for flexibility
Additionally, Gasum continues to run its own gas bunkering and transport fleet on bio-LNG for added compliance units for the FuelEU pooling market.

FuelEU Maritime is a regulation introduced by the European Union to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime sector as part of the EU's broader climate goals. The regulation came into force in 2025 and imposes limits on the carbon intensity of energy used by ships operating in European waters, incentivizing the shift to cleaner fuels and technologies.

The regulation allows for a pooling mechanism, which means that vessels that exceed the regulation's targets by using low- or zero-emission fuels - such as Wallenius SOL's and Viking Line's bio-LNG-powered ships - can generate surplus compliance units on behalf of others. The units are used to offset deficit from other vessels within the same pool, providing flexibility and promoting broader adoption of low-emission fuels in the maritime sector.
