Pascagoula, Miss. - December 19, 2018
VT Halter Marine, Inc. (VT Halter Marine), a company of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), today announced the successful delivery of M/V Taíno, one of the world’s first LNG-powered combination Container Roll-on/Roll-off (ConRo) vessels to Crowley Maritime Corporation (Crowley). This marks the completion of the programme awarded by Crowley in 2013.
Taíno, like her sister ship El Coquí delivered in July this year, are Crowley’s newest Commitment-Class vessels. Constructed at VT Halter Marine’s Pascagoula yard, these two ConRos meet U.S. Jones Act federal statute and are capable of transporting 2,400 twenty-foot-equivalent container units (TEU) and a mix of nearly 400 cars and larger vehicles in the enclosed, ventilated and weather-tight Ro/Ro decks.
At 219.5m long, 32.3m wide (beam), with a deep draft of 10m, Taíno has an approximate deadweight capacity of 26,500 metric tonnes. They are designed and equipped to carry containers, ranging from 20-foot standard to 53-foot by 102-inch-wide high-capacity units, with room for up to 300 refrigerated containers. Taíno will join El Coquí in Crowley’s domestic shipping fleet to support supply chain needs of residents and businesses in USA and Puerto Rico.
“VT Halter Marine’s participation with Crowley Maritime Corporation for the new Commitment-Class ships Taíno and El Coquí, two of the world’s first combination Container Roll-on/Roll-off ships powered by liquefied natural gas, are monumental for positioning VT Halter Marine as an early innovator in the growing LNG market for the United States,” said Ronald Baczkowski, President & CEO, VT Halter Marine.
