OOCL Jakarta named at Geoje Shipyard, Korea

OOCL is proud to announce on June 1, 2010, the christening of our newest vessel, the OOCL Jakarta (4,578 TEUs). This vessel is the last in our line of 32 vessels on order from Samsung Heavy Industries. The order included sixteen 4,578 vessels and sixteen 8,063 vessels.

The OOCL Jakarta was named by sponsor Mrs Tamlyn Steinke, wife of Mr. Dick Steinke, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach. Mr Philip Chow, CEO of OOCL, hosted the ceremony which was held at Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard on Geoje Island, Korea. Mr SY Bae, President and Shipyard General Manager, Samsung Heavy Industries also attended the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Chow said, “Mr Dick Steinke has often described the Port of Long Beach as “The Port of the Future”, and we are proud to partner with such a dynamic and forward-thinking port. OOCL and the Port of Long Beach are working closely together on the Middle Harbour Redevelopment Project, which will create 14,000 new jobs, improve freight mobility and help improve air quality in the City of Long Beach and the wider Southern California region.”

“The Port of Long Beach has been instrumental in pioneering new terminal technologies and new environmental standards for the industry. With improved efficiency and upgraded infrastructure at the port, OOCL can offer more competitive services to our customers. The m.v. OOCL Jakarta will be deployed in the CPX service.

The port rotation is: Shanghai / Ningbo / Shekou / Singapore / Karachi/ Mundra / Nhava Sheva / Penang / Port Kelang / Singapore / Hong Kong and back to Shanghai in a-35 day round trip.
